Dominick Street
Doyle + O’Troithigh Landscape Architecture Ltd were appointed to the Dominick Street Upper Student Accommodation project team during the concept design stage of the planning process. Working with the Project team, client and Dublin City Council we proposed a series of spaces which were focused on the delivery of external amenity areas at ground and roof terrace level for the students.
The tight confined nature of the site coupled with the challenges presented by the existing surrounding infrastructure set parameters which we worked through and with to provide areas of passive and active amenity for the students. Spaces which could be used by groups or individuals. Spaces which could be used all year round to provide the students with a release valve.
For the duration of the project we worked closely with the Project Architects to ensure that the external areas compliment the building and linked with the existing street and adjoining properties.
The use of contemporary materials and plant species was an important factor of the design, together with the contractors we tested the selected materials to ensure that they provided the development and the students with a finish which was tactile, robust and visually pleasing. This allowed us to create the small contemporary areas which are calming to be in, and look into.
